DIY: Mission Scrapbook

You better bet that all your future companions, instructors, investigators and new friends are going to want to see pictures of your life back home while you are on your mission. HENCE, the DIY scrapbook. Eh?

Not only is this a great way to keep your memories close to your heart while you are away from home, but it truly is a great way to come to life and teach investigators about forever families, and all the great blessings that come from the church!

For my Scrapbook, I found this awesome series at target by "K&Company" called 'Smash!" One of my good friends made a scrapbook for me using this setup and I LOVED it. The set comes in a package that looks like this..

It was about twelve dollars at the store, you can find it in the notebooks/crafts section. TIP: USE THE PEN IT COMES WITH. Sharpies seep through the pages.

This is the front, super simple..

What i love most is the cute/creative inside pages that are thick and durable, this way you dont have to add any other added cardstock, or much effort with the creativeness (am i lazy yet?)

So what I have done so far, is on the very first page i wrote my name..

I'm planning on puting a geneology/family history chart on the inside cover. Followed by my parents engagement picture, my mom pregnant with me and BOOM me. As a baby. With my birthdate.

Next, pictures of mom and me

Then Dad...

And the oh so memorable mormon saying "Forever Family"

The next few pages are for each of my siblings i have five of them..

Then my grandparents..

I want to add a couple pictures of my hometown including my house, our temple and the view of Dixie!

Some of the pages i just love (like the one above) so i've left them empty. The next couple are adventures i've tried, places i've been etc.

Then highschool, and graduation

My baptism day, and temple..

Pictures with my call, when i got my call, and a copy of MY CALL (to serve)

Ward Activities/Girlscamp..

Oh and can't forget my ELDER

/bestfriend

More Good Friends..

& some favorite quotes/scriptures..

I have plenty more pages to fill out and hopefully will get it done before i leave
BUT thus far, it has been a favorite purchase for my mission and hopefully will be quite the asset.
Goodluck Sisters!

The Sisters of Zion

The artist of "As Sisters in Zion" has written several new verses to extend the song. Here is a link, & lyrics, enjoy!

https://www.ldsmag.com/article/1/12869

The sisters of Zion are called to God’s labor
We willingly serve Him with spirit and might
We go to the nations with truth everlasting
We teach of the Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ

We thank thee, O God, for a prophet to guide us
We trust in His words and our purpose is clear
The angels of heaven are walking beside us
We’ll share our glad tidings with all who will hear

We go forth enlisted with Helaman’s Army
In numbers much greater than ever before
With power and spirit we’ll faithfully witness
The heavens have spoken, and truth is restored

Q's & A's: Answers from a Current SisMish

I had the oppurtunity to meet Sister Eddy before she left on her mission to serve in the Washington DC South mission (where I am headed in approx. 30 days!!!) And have had the oppurtunity to ask her some questions via email in which she responded with her knowledge thus far in her missionary experience. Here is a quick glimpse of them!

What did you do for banking? Which bank did you go through & what did you take with you? Debit card/credit card/both?
I just took my debit card. I use Zions bank, but they don’t have a zions out here, which hasn’t been a problem for me.  And my Dad just takes care of everything as far as making sure there is money in there. The mission also gives you a card for essentials, groceries, toiletries stuff like that. You get something like $175 a month.
At the Mtc they give you $8 a week so spend at the store and for laundry. Make sure you have enough garments because you only have one p-day in the 2 weeks you are in the MTC.

Shoes.... Are sandals allowed in the spring/summer? Combat boots? If they are plain?
Sandals aren’t allowed! I’m so sad because I brought my salt waters….i don’t know if they are allowed on p-day or what so…we’ll see. Combat boot are good!! They are basically all I wear since it got cold.

For winter do you suggest nylons tights or leggings?
All of the above! Its not even officially winter yet and I’m already wearing tight every day.

What did you do for bedding?
I didn’t bring anything except my silk pillowcase. If you have room bring whatever you want or you can buy it here the first day. Either way works. I wish I would have brought my blanket from home that had sentimental value…but this new one I bought is nice too.

Am I allowed to bring an auxiliary chord for the car to listen to churchy iPod music? Or nada?
Yes!!! Bring that auxiliary cord girl!!! You’re going to want it!!! And bring soooo much music!!! You’re going to want it and your companions will love you for it!! Have you hear of the lower lights? Get some of their music! And prince of Egypt and all that good stuff!

How many journalish things did you bring? How do you keep organized with all that ish?
I brought: a note book that I usually write letters in and rip out pages, a journal, and a study journal.
I wish I would have brought a sketch pad and lots of post it notes!
We have desks so there is plenty of room for all that junk! I also brought lots of pens and markers and highlights for fun. I like marking my scriptures with highlighters instead.

Do you bring your own pmg? Or just get one at the MTC? What materials do they give you?
They will give you a pmg at the MTC. You don’t need to bring your own. But they do sell little ones and sometimes I wish I had one just so I have more room in my bag. Also they don’t have a Deseret book out here so but any kind of Mormon stuff you want at home or the mtc before you come out here!
Um….yeah they also give you missionary pamphlets and stuff but… yeah that’s about it.
What do you wish you would have brought? What do you wish you would have just left home?
I’m so glad I brought my nice camera instead of just a cheap one. It been great on p-days. I wish I would have brought more music….um yeah… and maybe another bag. That’s about it.
Love ya sister! can't wait till youre out here with us!

If you have any further questions feel free to email me at madison.stucki@myldsmail.net

Love you all and good luck!

#SisterMishFash

Quick Tip:
Black, is my staple.

One trick I have found to be successful is to try and buy 'neutral' colored skirts, this way no matter what color of top you buy, it can be easily switched up.

Example:
The skirts can be easily worn with the next days top/layering combination, to create a whole new outfit look.

ALSO
To help make packing lighter, buy scarves/necklaces to further change up your outfit combinations, rather than buying a whole new outfit to try and shove in your suitcase!

Good Luck Sisters!

Are you a Reader?

Since I was in first grade, I have been a fan of reading and an avid quote collector. I truly believe reading helps improve all areas of intelligence and builds your knowledge base more than anything else you could spend your time on. That being said, lately I've been trying to find good reads to help me throughout my mission. After all, what you don't know you can't teach! In General Conference one of my favorite quotes was said by Elder McConkie when he said..

"You cannot expect the holy ghost to help you remember things you have never read or studied! STUDY. SEARCH. PRAY. As you dedicate yourself the same Holy Ghost who revealed to prophets of old will reveal unto you. The holy ghost will then be able to bring all things to your remembrance in the very hour that you need."

If that isnt insentive enough to get READING than i don't know what is! As I read, i like to highlight and scribble notes in my books and pamphlets to note important things that stick out to me. Kind of like scripture marking. However, i know i will not be able to take every book i own with me on my mission. So I usually go back at the end and re-write my favorite quotations or stories into small journal (I found for $5 at ross) so that i have a collection of inspiring and motivational tidbits to share in the mission field!

Here is a list of books, pamphlets and talks that have inspired me and i hope will do the same for you. Enjoy!

What I Wish I Would Have Known Before My Mission
John Bytheway
John is a hilarious, motivational speaker for youth. The book is full of good advice and tips. The end has an epilogue of information he thought was valuable to the reader. Such as frequent questions he was asked and answers he has studied up on and wish he would have known.

My Beloved Sisters
Spencer W. Kimball
This book isn't very long but it is especially for sisters. This book helps you better understand your role as a women, even if you already know these things, it gives you insight on how you might share this information with OTHER women, especially while in the mission field. It points out many joys that are worth living for, it is a book full of hope and peace, inspiration and guidance and points out great truths in the divine and important role of women and daughters of God.

LDS Family Services: Addiction Recovery Program (Book)
LDS Family Services
While reading this you have to keep in mind that there are MANY forms of addictions. This book isn't just meant for one or two of the more 'popular' addictions, but it can help you in almost every aspect of your life. It also gaurentees you to better understand what others are going through and how to help them overcome any struggles or challenges they may be facing. It is full of advice and church council, that EVERYONE can apply to their life.

For The Strength of Youth
LDS (Pamphlet)
DO NOT UNDERMINE the value in the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet. You may have read it a thousand times, read it again. The simple truths in this book are easy to teach, and to show how they will bless and affect your life immensily by following its teachings. Don't forget to take one of these on your mission with you!

Defending the Church
Wayne D Arnett
(sorry for poor internet quality)
This is a reference guide/pamphlet about defending the church. I wouldn't advise that you rely on 'defense' for teaching, that isn't your calling. However, this book is full of interesting facts about the church that are good to know for your own self.

Cast Not Away Therefore Your Confidence
Jeffery Holland
(Talk)
I would print this one out and read it. And re read it. And glue it in your journal. And tape it to your wall. This talk is right on key. Take it on your mission with you. Pass it around. Live by it. If you don't read anything else, read this one.

These are a few of my most recent 'reads.' Of course, when you receive your mission call they have a list of books you should bring with you on your mission. Such as the 'True to the Faith' and 'Jesus the Christ' book collection (which you can buy at any local lds book store, such as seagull or Deseret book in a package deal!) As well as your Preach My Gospel, Missionary Prep, Temple Prep and of course The Book of Mormon, Bible, Doctrine & Covenants & Pearl of Great Price.

WOW LOTS OF READING EH?

I haven't yet read ALL of the list of mission required books, but those are for sure flying with me to DC, so i will have eighteen months with 'em. Good luck on your reading! If you find any new inspiring favorites please email me at madison.stucki@myldsmail.net and let me know. Love you all and good luck!

#GenCon2013

"In my journal tonight I will write, that this has been the most spiritual General Conference I have ever experienced."
-President & Prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Thomas S. Monson

Unfortunately, I have not yet been able to watch the Saturday session of General Conference this year due to work, however, on Saturday i kept a running list of Questions i would like to have answered while i watched and listened to Sundays two sessions of General Conference.

I would like to say fist and far most, i am continually amazed at the spiritual guidance and revelation these leaders receive. I am astounded at my results. It is a personal witness and revelation to me that the church is true, and i am so excited to share it with others in the eighteen month duration of my mission, and the rest of my life!

These questions are personal questions, for me specifically. But I hope that maybe, some of you may have similar questions as me and learn from the teachings and quotes i gathered while answering my questions during general conference this year. Enjoy!

1. How do I stay confident regarding future and present decisions and not fear or feel inadequate or incapable?
"Ask yourself, what is your ultimate priority?" -Dallin H. Oaks. "Remember no person has ever lived free of sorrow. Sadness and suffering is universal. The ability to endure is crucial. Ask yourself, Shall I Falter or shall i finish?" -Thomas S. Monson

2. How to be ‘less stressed?’
"Lay aside the things of this world and seek for that of a better." -Sister Oscarson, referring to Emma Smith

3. How should I go about making personal decisions regarding my future spouse and marriage plans? Advice on keeping your relationship ‘as one‘ throughout your marriage?
Eyring: “This applies to all relationships regardless the circumstance. It is the Lords advice to all who want to live together forever in happiness, it is the first great commandment. “thou shall love the lord thy god with all thy might, mind and strength. And love they neighbor like unto thyself"

“The miracle of becoming one requires help from heaven.”

Quinton L. Cook: (speaking of spouse) “to the extent possible, we would choose activities we could attend together.”

4. How do I help others feel the spirit especially while teaching the gospel or sharing my testimony?
David M. McKonkie: The secret to becoming a successful teacher…have a solid testimony on what took place on the day the gospel was restored to the earth through Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ to Joseph Smith. Summarized in two words, GOD SPEAKS.

This is what sets you apart, this is why you cannot fail. You have been called and set apart by the priesthood and you are AUTHORIZED and COMMISSIONED to act on his behalf. You have his help. Ask yourself, "What would the savior say/do if HE was teaching?"

"Your first responsibility is to be worthy so the holy ghost will be your constant companion.
The most important part of your service will be your own personal preparation” (-the first presidency)
Not to master techniques of teaching or memorizing the lessons. The people you are teaching will exercise their own agency of believing these things. The presidency has promised if you do this the holy ghost will help you to know what to do. Before you seek to declare his word, seek to obtain it. He will bless you with the spirit and aid in the convincing of men.

Learn to listen. “Second only is the responsibility you have to listen to the people. They will tell you what they need to hear. Teachers are too focused on preparing repetitious, comfortable lessons.” Set aside outlines and notes, let the spirit teach.

As you dedicate yourself the same holy ghost who revealed things to prophets of old and new will reveal things unto you. The holy ghost will then be able to bring all things to your remembrance in the way that you need. You will learn things from what you way when you teach.

A teacher, is also a student.

You must stand as an independent witness not just an echo of what has been said and written. The same spirit will carry your message into the hearts of those who desire and are willing to listen.

5. How do I become a leader and an example? How do I make an impact or effect on people? How do I change lives? How do I encourage others? (read above answer again thoroughly)

6. How do I remember spiritual experiences? Teaching skills? Scripture/book references?
"You cannot expect the holy ghost to help you remember scriptures you have never read or studied! STUDY. SEARCH. PRAY. As you dedicate yourself the same Holy Ghost who revealed to prophets of old will reveal unto you. The holy ghost will then be able to bring all things to your remembrance in the very hour that you need. You will learn things from that which you teach." -David Mckonckie

7. How to be less self centered? How to be less hard headed?
Eyring: serve others. You’ll be more likely to hear the Holy ghost.

8. How do I deal with a pita (paininthebutt) family member?
pres. Eyring: while serving others, we are more likely to find peace,  through the Holy Ghost. A parent facing a child in serious rebellion knows that this is true. Keep the constant companionship of the holy ghost.
Life in families will test us. We will find great joy, great sorrow and challenges. Endure them.
Pray with faith that that someone you love will seek and feel the power of the atonement.

“A grandmother once cried to the Lord, why me? Why after the faithful life I have lived have I had such a tragedy with my son as this? The words came clearly to her ‘I gave him to you because I knew you could and would love him no matter what he did.”

9. How to recognize and feel the spirit? How do I discern whether it is the spirit? How do I feel the impact of the Holy Ghost constantly in my life?
Kevin S. Hamilton: Revelation and testimony come when we attend church meetings, live worthily (through experience), study our scriptures and learn more about the church.

Adrain Ochoa: “By their fruits ye shall know them.“ Bad fruit does not fall from a good tree. if you come across anything that causes you to question your testimony, LOOK UP. Remain constantly WORTHY of the spirit. It is not a convenience, it is essential.

10. How do I take risks and be brave?
Dallin H. Oaks: “All men have fears. Those who face their fears with dignity have courage as well.”

11. What should I do so I feel I have spent my time wisely throughout my day and/or life?
"Ask Yourself: What is your ultimate priority?" -Dallin H Oaks.

"We must successfully endure, through the strength of your testimony and the depth of your conversion. Be spiritually prepared.” -Richard Maynes

12. How do I have a greater desire to serve and do what the lord would like me to?
Pres eyering: “Remember that there is joy guaranteed for the faithful.”

13. When do I know it is the right time to start a family?
"This is a family centered church. We have heavenly parents. Our ultimate treasures are our children and our posterity. United States statistics have fallen, births rates and successful marriage rates have both decreased drastically. Serve god first. (Gods church is centered on family. Gods Priority is marriage and to have a family.) Prioritize." -Dallin H Oaks

14. How to be happy?
“There is but one plan of happiness, to follow all the commandments of God.” -President Eyring

“You have agency. Poor choices can lead to long term consequences, vulnerability used by satan to exploit. AVOID his enticements. Fill your life with service to others and all satans temptations will lose their power in your life” - Richard Scott

17. How to become closer to Christ? How can I know him personally?
"Ask yourself.. What choices have led you to love thy Lord with all they might, mind and strength?" -Eyring

Richard G. Scott: "Recognize the power of the atonement in your life. The Lord sees weakness differently than rebellion. Pray for forgiveness. He who has repented of their sins the same is forgiven and he remembers them no more. Serve him faithfully."

18. How do I relate to people in the mission field? How to get their attention, to have a desire to hear my message?
"Be compassionate and loving to all men. We are hopeful others will be respectful to our beliefs as well.” -Oaks

20. How do I get along with and be close to my future companions?
"The first great commandment. Love the lord with all your might mind and strength. Love your neighbor like unto yourself." -Eyring

21. How to feel reassured? How to reassure others?
"There is not one of us that he has not designed a plan to SAVE. We are the children of god." -Eyring

22. How do we receive personal revelation?
"Living the gospel principles and sacrificing for them. Do his will and you will have knowledge.” -Sister Oscarson "You receive witness after a trial of your faith. Then true conversion begins to take place. ACT THEN RECEIVE. YOU are primarily responsible for your conversion, no one else is, OR CAN BE. Only you.”

23. How to know the BOM is true and have manifested for sure?
ACT. Receive. Exercise faith. This applies to ALL principles. (aka read the bom and pray about it) -oscarson

24. How to be absolutely positive about the gospel, and have unwavering faith like the brother jared in the BOM?
(YES THIS WAS MY FAVORITE WHEN HE BROUGHT UP THIS EXACT SCRIPTURE STORY!?)
Terence Vinson said: Is Christ your vocal point or is he far from the thoughts and intentions of your heart? How would YOU feel if someone promised you something every single week and never kept their promise? (sacrament promises)

His guidance, is essential. (Jared Story: Crossing the waters dangerously, acting of faith) Why not remove the source of danger, simply stop it from happening? The weather could have just been adjusted, he has the power to do that! Rather than solve the problems himself, he wants us to find faith in him. To trust him. To become like him. He wants us to REALLY LOVE HIM. That way, he can bless our lives with all that we ask. He is always there. And we can return that in our own imperfect way by giving him our hearts.

"I rejoice in the day when he shall say come unto me and my blessed, for there is a place prepared for you in the mansions of my father."

25. What is a piece of advice specifically for me, set apart from all the rest, that I can love and remember especially throughout my entire service in the mission field that will help me to strive to become better?
Richard G Scott: “A young women asked me: What is the single most important thing I can do right now?” My advice to her was “To recognize the power of the atonement in your life.” The atonement brings personal strength to the children of God.

Look upon this list and follow it.
Make covenants. -and Keep the ordinances.
Share the gospel. -It renews enthusiasm about the church!
Serve faithfully in all your callings
Be a REAL friend -through acts of kindness.
Serve members of your own family
Fill your life with service to others and satans temptations loose their power in your life.

The Church is True, AMEN #ldsconf

She's Packin'

are you packing up to leave for two years anytime soon? if so, read on.

When it comes to packing....women are a joke. *struggles*

HOWEVER.

I'm here to share with you the knowledge I have acquired thus far in my packing experience for an eighteen month journey across the United States. //yourwelcome

So first off, if you are planning on hauling bedding... You are probably drowning in your tears when you realize that your bedding takes up a whole suitcase itself.
SPACE BAGS.

Space Bags are by far my best investment. Many missionaries say to take YOUR OWN bedding with you so you are more comfortable and have an easier time falling asleep when you are half way across the world/trapped in the MTC. & I concur. Sooo I am taking my black and white throw with me that i've slept with forever. It is king size and has a soft/fur material on the inside, to keep extra warm in cold climates. (such as DC) You can buy these for relatively inexpensive prices. I got mine at Ross.

After space-bagging it, i can fit the entire thing + my pillow, space bagged, in the side zipper of my large suitcase. Its perfect, so it doesn't take up any room in the majority of my luggage.  I bought a twin size teal fitted sheet to cover the mattress, and a teal pillow case, for five dollars at wal-mart. Super easy, and cheaper than going and buying a twin size bed-in-a-bag to haul around.

Next was my shoe dilemma. It rains A TON in DC. Everyone suggests you take waterproof rainboots. I wanted to stay neutral so they match the majority of my outfits and my black (trench) coat!

Yes, these are rainboots! I thought the zipper was adorable and couldnt pass them up. I found them on Target Online for around $30

I have never been a fan of classic flats. So i found these gems. They cover less, making it more airy feeling so your feet can actually breathe. They will be awesome for spring/summer in DC when its all humid and etc. Plus they are super cute, and different!

 Forever 21

I love the strappy-ness of these ones! Forever 21 as well.

These are the Clarks i found at ross for a steal of $30
(regular price is $60, yikes!)
They are widely known within sister missionaries for the best tracting shoes!

I bought these knock-off "oxfords" at Christensens.
Super cute and Conservative for everyday outfits

*later on in mission life*

I invested in what I like to call 'flandals'
ya know. the strappy flats that really aren't flats because they have so many holes in them.  (similar to the white shoes in the image above)
best buy of my life. but you know, you do you.

These Babies i found at Ross for about $10 a piece. I'm using one for shower/makeup/hygiene stuff, to haul to the bathrooms in the MTC.
The other one i'm going to keep all medications/vitamins in. I'm also currently trying to find one to organize jewelry in. It might be a good organizer for garments and underclothing as well. They are super convenient

EVERYONE should invest in a laundry basket. $3 at ross.
You'll love it when you're trying to balance ten thousand skirts in two hands when doing laundry, plus keeping your dirty clothing organized all week. Its a charm, and takes up no space at all in the suitcase!

I'm taking a jock bag with me empty. In case i need to just throw a bunch of stuff in it for a transfer AND exchanges. Make sure to get one with a side sling, that way its easy to throw over your body/shoulder while you are wheeling your other luggage at the airport/trainstation whatever. I found this for $20 at ross as well!

Yes, my family is taking over my room while i'm away, so i'm packing my closet up as well! I went through and organized it all according to seasons, clothing items etc. Make sure you label! That way my mom can send me whichever clothing items i need as the seasons change while i'm gone! It'll be easier for her to find.

I am an avid reader, unfortunately i can't haul around a library with me. I've condensed some of my favorite quotes, thoughts or sayings into a quote book. I use these notebooks on the reg at transfer meetings, zone conferences, district meetings.....meetings.....
theyre perf.

This is also a great way to remember what you read, and help you study. I've loved it. Local ross has tons and tons of cute and compact note books/journals like this one.

Back to school sales are offering tons of cute folders and binders. This re-tractable file folder has been one of my favorite buys! i got a larger one to keep stationary/letters in as well. I collect everything. So i have tabs to keep printed conference talks in, handouts, brochures/souvenirs, letters and other such materials i find along my way!

EVERYONE is going to want to see pictures of you your family and your hometown before you left to serve! These little picture books are super cheap! Before you go make sure you remember to print some of your favorite pictures to show everyone! And also to look back on when you are out in the field (:

I'm just beginning mine, but i'm excited to fill it all up!

Well thanks for reading guys! I hope some of these ideas helped you out a little and gave you some great new ideas for your packing. Good luck! Love you All!
